Start with one stable chord
Reset the test to the simplest possible state: one left finger for degree I and one right finger for Quality 1. Hold both shapes for a moment rather than immediately moving through a progression. If that single chord remains stable, the camera and recognition pipeline are basically working and you can add complexity one control at a time.
If the chord still flickers, do not compensate by waving faster. Rapid motion creates more ambiguous frames. Keep the wrists visible, separate the hands, and watch whether a fingertip is repeatedly crossing another finger or leaving the frame.
If one hand disappears
Move farther from the webcam until the entire hand, including the wrist and fingertips, fits comfortably inside the image. A hand can be obvious to you while still being partially outside the camera crop. Keep a margin around the hand instead of using the full edge-to-edge frame.
Check overlap next. When the right hand crosses in front of the left, landmark points can become difficult to assign consistently. Practice with the left hand on the left side of the image and the right hand on the right. Once the progression is reliable, you can experiment with more expressive movement without losing the basic separation reference.
If finger counts flicker
Finger detection depends on relative landmark positions, so bent fingers that hover near the extended/not- extended boundary may alternate between two interpretations. Make the intended gesture more deliberate: extend raised fingers clearly, fold unused fingers without hiding the entire palm, and avoid pointing the fingertips directly toward the camera when possible.
Lighting affects those landmarks indirectly. Strong backlight can turn the hand into a dark silhouette; very dim light can add blur and camera noise. A soft lamp or window in front of you is usually more useful than adding more brightness behind you.
If chords change unexpectedly
Gesture Synth stabilizes a candidate gesture before committing a new chord because camera landmarks move a little even when your hand looks still. Unexpected changes usually mean the detector is seeing a real boundary crossing: a finger is partially extending, the wrist orientation is changing mode, or the right hand is briefly entering another quality.
Separate the diagnosis by hand. Keep the right hand on Quality 1 and test left-hand degrees first. Then hold degree I and test Quality 1 through 4. Finally add wrist movement, octave, volume, and filter. This isolates which movement is producing the unwanted state change.
If camera permission or the wrong camera is the problem
A denied permission request prevents tracking entirely. Use your browser's site-permission control to allow camera access, confirm the selected device, and reload the page. If you have a built-in webcam and an external camera, disconnecting the unused device temporarily can make the test simpler.
Gesture Synth requests video only and does not need microphone permission. If the browser reports that the camera is already in use, close other tabs or applications that may have exclusive control, then try again. For browser-level setup, see the compatibility guide.
If tracking works but audio does not
Recognition and synthesis are separate parts of the experience. If you can see tracking feedback but hear no chord, confirm the browser tab is not muted and the operating system is using the expected output device. Then show a valid degree and quality with both hands. A closed right-hand fist intentionally silences the chord, so use one clearly raised right finger for the first sound test.

A ten-minute reset procedure
When several things seem wrong at once, reset the session instead of changing random controls. First reload the page and confirm the intended camera is active. Second, position both hands with clear margins around the wrists and fingertips. Third, test I + Quality 1 until it remains stable. Fourth, move only the left hand through I-IV-V-I. Fifth, hold degree I and test right-hand qualities. Only after those checks pass should you add wrist mode changes, octave, volume, and filter movement.
This sequence produces useful evidence. If the first chord never stabilizes, focus on camera, light, or finger shape. If left-hand degrees work but qualities do not, isolate the right hand. If both recognize correctly but sound is delayed, investigate audio output. A structured reset prevents one symptom from being mistaken for another.
When to report a reproducible problem
If the same failure remains after a clean browser test, note the browser and operating system, which camera is selected, the exact gesture that fails, and whether the tracking display or only the audio is affected. A reproducible description is more useful than a general report that tracking feels wrong because it lets the project distinguish gesture-classification behavior from device-specific permission or performance problems.
