How to play songs on Gesture Synth

Turn any chord progression you already know into Gesture Synth hand gestures: identify the key, convert each chord to a scale degree, then perform the sequence with your left and right hands.

Map a song to gestures in four steps

Gesture Synth works from scale degrees rather than fixed chord names. To play a song, start with the song's chord progression, choose the same key in Gesture Synth, then translate each chord root to I through VII. Your left hand selects that degree while your right hand chooses the chord quality.

  1. Find the song's key and write down the chord progression you want to play.
  2. Convert each chord root into a Roman-numeral scale degree relative to that key.
  3. Use the matching left-hand gesture for I through VII.
  4. Use the right hand for the base chord, inversion, seventh, or dominant/diminished color you need.

Convert chord names to scale degrees

The same left-hand shape means a different chord root when you change keys. For example, IV is F in C major but C in G major. That is why converting the progression to Roman numerals first makes a song portable across keys.

Practice a common song progression

A useful first pattern is I-V-vi-IV. In C major that maps to C-G-A-F roots; in G major it maps to G-D-E-C. Keep the right hand on Quality 1 while learning the order. Use major context for I, V, and IV, then turn the left wrist to minor context for vi before returning to major.

Another simple practice loop is I-IV-V-I. It uses only the one-, four-, and five-finger degree gestures, so it is a good warm-up before a longer song progression.

Match major, minor, and chord quality

The left wrist switches the current harmony between major and minor context. The right hand then chooses the voicing: one raised finger uses the base major or minor shape, two uses a first inversion, three adds a seventh, and four uses dominant seventh in major mode or diminished seventh in minor mode.

For a first pass through a song, use Quality 1 and focus on the correct chord roots. Once the progression is stable, use the richer qualities only where they match the harmony you are trying to reproduce.

Use octave, volume, and filter as arrangement tools

Add the right thumb to move the selected quality one octave lower. Move the right hand vertically for volume, and tilt the right wrist to sweep the filter. These controls are useful for shaping sections of a song without changing the underlying progression.

What if I only have sheet music or chord symbols?

You do not need a special Gesture Synth score. If your source already lists chord symbols, identify the key and convert the chord roots to scale degrees. If you only have standard notation, first determine the harmony or use a chord chart you are allowed to reference, then follow the same degree-mapping process.

Gesture Synth is best at performing chord progressions and expressive synth movement. It is not a note-for-note sheet-music renderer, so simplify dense arrangements to the harmonic changes you actually want to perform.

How to find the key before mapping chords

If a chord chart already names the key, use that information. If it does not, look for the chord that feels like home at the beginning or end of a section and compare the other roots with a major or minor scale built from that note. You do not need to solve every piece of harmonic theory before playing; you only need a key choice that makes the progression's roots line up consistently with I through VII.

When two interpretations seem possible, test the simpler one first. Gesture Synth makes key changes cheap: keep the same Roman-numeral progression, change the selected key, and listen to whether the result better matches the harmonic shape you expect. This is one advantage of separating scale degree from fixed note name.

Simplify complex chord charts before you perform them

Real chord charts often contain slash chords, suspensions, added tones, passing chords, or substitutions. Do not try to encode all of that detail on the first pass. Start with the root movement and basic major or minor quality. If the progression is C-G/B-Am-F, for example, you can first practice I-V-vi-IV and ignore the bass inversion in G/B until the hand sequence is dependable.

Then add detail selectively. Quality 2 can suggest an inversion, Quality 3 can add seventh color, and the right thumb can move a voicing down an octave. The goal is not to reproduce a piano arrangement note for note; it is to preserve the harmonic landmarks that make the progression recognizable while leaving room for Gesture Synth's own expressive controls.

Common mapping mistakes

  • Using fixed chord names after changing the Gesture Synth key instead of remapping the roots to degrees.
  • Changing chord quality and scale degree at the same time before the left-hand sequence is stable.
  • Forgetting to switch major/minor context when a progression moves to a minor chord such as vi.
  • Trying to reproduce every extension in a dense chord symbol before the root progression is playable.
  • Moving through shapes so quickly that the tracker never sees a stable candidate gesture.

A repeatable practice workflow

  1. Write the progression as Roman numerals in one key.
  2. Practice only the left-hand degree sequence until each transition is deliberate.
  3. Add major/minor wrist context without changing right-hand quality.
  4. Add one inversion or seventh only where it clearly improves the progression.
  5. Shape volume and filter over the whole phrase instead of treating every chord as an isolated event.
